Marrakech is an explosion of colors, smells and sounds. It may seem chaotic at first glance, but once you learn to flow with the rhythm of the medina and take refuge in the calm of a traditional riad, it becomes one of the most fascinating trips you can take just a few hours' flight from Europe.

First visit

The chaos that makes sense.

The heart of Marrakech is the Jemaa el-Fnaa square, surrounded by the Medina (the old walled city). Here, there are no cars, but motorbikes and donkeys cross the narrow alleys at all times. The true luxury of Marrakech is crossing a modest wooden door and entering a Riad: a silent interior courtyard with fountains, tiles and singing birds, isolated from the madness outside.

When to go

Avoid the summer ovens.

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the best times. The weather is mild and warm. In summer (July and August), temperatures often soar above 40°C, making daytime walks unbearable. Winter has pleasant sunny days, but the nights are quite cold.

Budget

How much does it cost?

Marrakech offers options for all budgets, from €2 street food to luxury restaurants. Indicative values.

  • Accommodation (Riad): €60 to €150 / night (a traditional riad with breakfast).
  • Food: €15 to €35 / day (tagines, couscous and mint tea).
  • Transport: ~€5 / short taxi ride (always negotiated!).
  • Attractions: Palaces and gardens usually cost around €7 to €15 (70-150 MAD).
Where to stay

Inside or outside the walls?

It all depends on whether you want to be in the center of the hustle and bustle or if you are looking for more modern comforts.

Getting around

On foot and the art of negotiation.

Inside the Medina, you can only get around on foot. To go from the Medina to Gueliz or the Majorelle Garden, you'll need a taxi.

  • Taxis (Petit Taxis): They are small and beige. By law, they should use the meter, but they almost never want to for tourists. Negotiate the price before getting in. A trip within the city shouldn't cost more than 40-50 MAD (4-5€).
  • Airport Transfer: It's highly recommended to ask your Riad to arrange a transfer from the airport. Finding a specific Riad in the Medina maze with luggage for the first time is extremely difficult.
Suggested plan

3 days in the Red City.

Day 1

The heart of the Medina

  • Morning: Explore the Souks (markets). Get lost (literally) in the alleys of spices, rugs and lamps.
  • Afternoon: Visit the Medersa Ben Youssef (an old Islamic school with impressive architecture) and the Secret Garden.
  • Evening: Jemaa el-Fnaa Square. Watch the sunset from a terrace (like Café de France) while the square fills with food stalls, musicians and storytellers.
Day 2

Palaces and History

  • Morning: Visit the Bahia Palace (magnificent Moorish architecture) and the Saadian Tombs.
  • Afternoon: Relax in a traditional Hammam (Moroccan bath). Book in advance at places like Les Bains de Marrakech.
  • Evening: Dinner in a nice restaurant in the Medina (like Nomad or Le Jardin).
Day 3

Gardens and the New City

  • Morning: Take a taxi early to the Majorelle Garden (Yves Saint Laurent's former home). Book tickets online in advance!
  • Afternoon: Walk around the modern Gueliz neighborhood. Visit the Yves Saint Laurent Museum.
  • Evening: Dinner in Gueliz or Hivernage for a more modern experience.
Bruno's Tips

3 mistakes to avoid

  1. The "it's closed" scam: If someone approaches you in the Medina saying the road is closed or the palace is closed today, ignore them. They just want to guide you to their family's shop and demand a tip.
  2. Accepting the first price in the souks: Bargaining is the rule. Never accept the first price. A good rule of thumb is to offer 30-40% of the initial price and meet halfway. Keep a smile and don't stress.
  3. Taking photos of people without asking: Many locals, especially snake charmers and performers in the square, will demand money aggressively if you take their picture. In the souks, always ask before photographing a shop owner.
