A practical starting point to explore the island in depth — from peaks above the clouds to natural pools by the sea.

Madeira is one of those destinations that surprises first-time visitors. The island is small in size but giant in diversity: in a single day you can hike through an ancient forest, have lunch overlooking dramatic cliffs, and finish at a seaside restaurant in Funchal.

First visit

An island with the intensity of a continent.

Madeira is not a beach island. It's a mountain island surrounded by sea. The terrain is vertical, dramatic, and full of microclimates — you can be under the sun in Funchal and find thick fog at Pico do Areeiro 30 minutes later. That's what makes it fascinating.

When to go

A year-round destination.

Madeira has a mild climate all year round (15–25°C), making it a viable destination in any month. Spring (April–June) brings the flowers in full bloom. Summer is warm and dry. Autumn maintains pleasant temperatures. Winter is mild, ideal for hiking without excessive heat.

What I would do: If your main goal is the levadas and trails, avoid January and February, when rainfall can make some routes more technical.
Budget

How much does a trip to Madeira cost?

Madeira is an accessible destination for Europeans. Indicative values subject to change.

  • Accommodation: €50 to €120 / night (well-located hotels with sea or mountain views).
  • Food: €25 to €50 / day (local restaurants with espetada, bolo do caco and poncha).
  • Car rental: €25 to €45 / day (essential for exploring the island freely).
  • Attractions/Experiences: Most levadas are free. Boat tours and canyoning range from €30 to €60.
Where to stay

Base yourself practically.

Given the island's mountainous terrain, choosing a good base will save you hours of driving.

Funchal

€€ | Central, Restaurants, Access

The most practical choice. You have access to the main road network, hundreds of restaurants and night walks by the marina.

Ponta do Sol / Calheta

€€ | Sunny, Quiet, Beach

The sunniest area of the island. Quieter than Funchal, with small artificial beaches and a relaxed vibe.

São Vicente / Santana

€ | Nature, Dramatic, Microclimate

The North coast is wilder and greener, but also cloudier and rainier. Great for a secondary base if staying longer.

Getting around

Rent a car. Seriously.

While Funchal has good public transport, exploring the island's true gems (the start of levadas, hidden viewpoints, remote villages) requires a rental car.

  • The Roads: Madeira has an excellent network of tunnels and modern roads (vias rápidas). However, secondary roads can be extremely steep and winding. Rent a car with decent engine power.
  • Bolt / Taxis: Work well within Funchal, but are expensive and impractical for daily island exploration.
Suggested plan

5 days in Madeira.

Day 1

Funchal and its heights

  • Morning: Explore Funchal. Visit the Mercado dos Lavradores (farmers market) and the Zona Velha (Old Town).
  • Afternoon: Take the cable car up to Monte. Visit the Monte Palace Tropical Garden. Come down using the traditional basket sledges (Carreiros do Monte).
  • Evening: Dinner in Funchal and try a traditional Poncha.
Day 2

The dramatic East

  • Morning: Drive to Pico do Areeiro for sunrise (or early morning). It's above the clouds.
  • Afternoon: Head to Ponta de São Lourenço, the arid eastern peninsula. Hike the trail (Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço) for breathtaking cliff views.
  • Evening: Dinner in Machico or Caniçal (great for fresh seafood).
Day 3

The green North

  • Morning: Drive through the center of the island to Ribeiro Frio. Do the short hike to the Balcões viewpoint.
  • Afternoon: Continue to Santana to see the traditional triangular houses. Then drive along the spectacular north coast to São Vicente.
  • Evening: Return to Funchal or your base.
Day 4

Waterfalls and Levadas

  • Morning: Hike a Levada (irrigation channels). Levada das 25 Fontes or Levada do Caldeirão Verde are classics. Start early to avoid crowds.
  • Afternoon: Explore the Paul da Serra plateau, feeling like a different country. Visit the Fanal forest (mystical laurel forest, best with fog).
Day 5

The Sunny West

  • Morning: Head to Porto Moniz to swim in the natural volcanic pools.
  • Afternoon: Drive back along the southwest coast. Stop at the Cabo Girão skywalk (glass floor over a 580m cliff) and the picturesque village of Câmara de Lobos.
Bruno's Tips

3 mistakes to avoid

  1. Renting the cheapest car: Madeira's hills are steep. A 1.0L engine with 4 people will struggle immensely. Upgrade to a slightly more powerful car or an automatic.
  2. Trusting the weather forecast blindly: Madeira has microclimates. It can be raining in Funchal and sunny in Ponta do Sol. Check the webcams (app "Madeira Webcams") before deciding where to go that day.
  3. Not bringing a flashlight and rain jacket: Many levadas have long, dark tunnels. Your phone light might not be enough. And the weather can change quickly in the mountains.
