Abu Dhabi Abu Dhabi guide: what to do, where to stay and 3-day itinerary
A practical starting point for choosing the right area, getting around efficiently and planning your trip in the cultural capital of the UAE.
Less frantic than neighbouring Dubai, Abu Dhabi shines through its culture, vast mangroves and a calmer seaside rhythm along the Corniche and Saadiyat Island.
The capital of culture and peaceful grandeur.
Instead of a vertical race, Abu Dhabi focuses on world-class museums, vast palaces and white sandy beaches.
The climate changes the rhythm.
From November to February, milder temperatures make outdoor routes and beaches much more comfortable. In summer, the focus is 100% indoors.
How much does a trip to Abu Dhabi cost?
Many luxury hotels are slightly more affordable than in Dubai. Indicative values and subject to change.
- Accommodation: €120 to €250 / night (well-located double rooms).
- Food: €40 to €80 / day.
- Transport: €10 to €15 / day (Taxi and bus).
- Attractions: The incredible Mosque is free. Museums (like the Louvre) are around €15-€20. Theme parks are more expensive (€60+).
Expect an average budget of €450 to €800 per person (excluding flights).
Four bases with distinct rhythms.
If you want the beach, head to Saadiyat. To see the city, use the Corniche. For family fun, focus on Yas Island.

Excellent promenade and quick access to main avenues.

Etihad's Hub
Zayed International (AUH)
- Best for: It is the only main commercial airport. Very modern.
- Connection: Take an official taxi outside or an express bus to the city.
Use and abuse Taxis and apps
Unlike Dubai, Abu Dhabi does not have a metro network connecting the whole city, so a taxi is the most practical way to get around.
- Taxis / Uber / Careem: They are very accessible, well-regulated and safe. Careem works perfectly to call any taxi.
- Public Buses: They exist and are modern, but routes and stops can take longer. They require the Hafilat card.
Universal art, palaces and nature parks
Culture carries a huge weight in Abu Dhabi, from the art of the Louvre to architectural splendour.
Three well-filled days.
A balance between modern Islamic culture, perfect beaches and adventure.
Culture and Grandeur
- Morning: Visit the imposing Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (best light and less heat early in the morning).
- Afternoon: Lunch in the Corniche area and visit the Qasr Al Watan presidential palace.
- Night: Have a coffee with gold at the famous Emirates Palace or relax at the Marina.
Art and Sea on Saadiyat Island
- Morning: Explore the Louvre Abu Dhabi and its iconic dome.
- Afternoon: Spend the afternoon on the white sand beach (Saadiyat Beach) or in the mangroves (Jubail Mangrove Park).
- Night: A quiet dinner in one of the elegant restaurants of the cultural complex.
Fun or Tradition
- Option A (Action): Spend the day on Yas Island and visit Ferrari World or the Formula 1 circuit.
- Option B (Tradition): Take a half-day desert safari and discover Bedouin culture and the falcon hospital.
What to book in advance
I would book in advance
- Louvre Abu Dhabi: To ensure quick entry without queues.
- Qasr Al Watan: Useful to book a few days ahead.
- Yas Island Parks: Ferrari World or Warner Bros if the plan is for the weekend.
Can usually wait
- Sheikh Zayed Mosque: It is free, just register (ideally online before going, but there are spots).
- Walks on the Corniche or the Marina.
5 mistakes I would avoid in Abu Dhabi
- Not bringing appropriate clothing: The Mosque has strict rules (shoulders and legs covered; women must cover their hair and down to wrists/ankles). Bring your own scarf/abaya for comfort.
- Forgetting the mangroves: Many people only think of city and sand, but Jubail Mangrove Park is an incredible ecosystem right in the middle of the city.
- Walking long distances: With wide avenues and heat (especially from April to October), use taxis instead of walking for miles.
- Thinking it is "just like Dubai": Abu Dhabi has a more sophisticated energy, focused on art and less artificial beaches.
- Only staying half a day: A "bus trip from Dubai just to see the mosque and back" is a waste. Stay at least two nights!
